I mean I have to most people know this story I think but I'll tell you.
It's a play on my last name and it was the nickname I was given my freshman year of high school
going into school. Because we did, so basically we did football first in the summer before,
well, it's actually actually the first two or three weeks before school starts. I think it's technically
like camp. And so when we started school as a freshman, they asked us for stories, like,
my Spanish teacher asked for stories of like, it's like, it's your first day and they're like,
Like, oh, some of you guys already know each other from sports.
Like, you guys know each other, like, what's some good stories?
And someone told the story of me doing Oklahoma Giles, because I'd never play football
before.
And I ended up going up against this guy who was supposedly, like, really fucking good
in from another town, because I went to like a private school at night school, because
I'm parents from being there, because I was a fuck up.
I was a genuine, like, really bad fuck up, and they were, like, really worried that I was
not gonna, I was not gonna end up right,
so my grandparents threw me in there.
And yeah, we didn't have to do an Oklahoma drills,
and he was like someone was like,
oh, I put him out to the varsity ball of a block.
And I absolutely fucking pan kicked him into the ground.
And my last name was Flaherty,
and so I said they told him that story,
and he was like, look at my name on the chart,
or wherever, and he's like, I wanna call you Flaz.
And then after that, everyone in the class aren't saying that.
And then after that, it spread like wildfire.
And then like everyone on our team called me that.
And then I'd totally do my name through all of high school.
Like I don't think even most people
knew my first name was Jeff, but even my like high school friends
to this day will still call me that.
And then it became my gamer tag later on
because Xbox at the time, at a different name,
Xbox did a reset back in like 2013 or 2014,
where many old names got retired.
Like it was a big deal back then.
And they retired a bunch of old names.
And I remember sitting up at night, like midnight.
I was sitting there waiting,
just like trying it over and over seeing
if it was gonna work.
And then they did the reset, and I e-linked it.
So I got the name.
So I had just the name Flats as like my gamer tag.
And then I had that ever since.
And then I went to PC and I kept it.
And then I started streaming.
And I was like, what should my name be?
And I was like, oh yeah.
I'll just make it flat.
Oh, W.
And then I got partnered.
And when you get partnered on Twitch,
you can actually ask Twitch to give you
a different name.
And the name Facts was an old account
that was no longer being used on Twitch.
So I was like, let me just get flat.
It's a period, like, no, no, oh, W on it.
And that's why my Twitch name is just Facts.
But like, that's how I got the whole thing.
And I've had it ever since.
And actually, the funny thing is,
when I went to college, I went to two different colleges.
I went to one college, I went to a junior college
high school because my grades were really, really bad, and I went there, and somebody
found out that my high school nickname was Flaz, and everyone was like, that's fucking gas,
so everyone called me that, and I transferred to a different school, and this was a lot of
people I went to high school with, and so when I transferred there to walk on a different school,
I was friends with some people that were already on the team, and they instantly called me that,
and they were like, wait, that's, oh, they're referring to you, and I was like, yeah, and they're like,
like, all right, that's actually kind of a,
that's actually a fire nickname.
They're like, that's not actually your name.
I was like, no, and they're like, all right.
And then like, everyone called me that too
when I was in college too.
So like, I basically had it my entire life.
So combinations to note in different play styles,
histories and clays.
That's the Lawrence.
They can be simple, profane, jokes, random stories.
And there are the reason the second you join a bad
worst match, you know if you're going to win or not.
Whether or not it's random garbage
or thoughtful garbage, these names mean something.

And I want to see if there are any trends associated with game retags
that I can find. So I'm going to use my newly acquired college decree to survey people across
many different games. I will be using several different metrics I came up with and attempting
to sample around 100 gamer tags from a bunch of different games to analyze trends. I will take
the username and review it myself and check to see if it's profane, a joke, readable, or just
keyboard matching, how many syllables, if it has numbers, if so, which ones, if it is slang,
if it contains no alphabetical or numeric. You're the only one you can do it with.
Oh, and lastly, what is its use of capital letters?
Also, just a disclaimer, I'm not a statistician or anything.
I took a couple of research classes, but it wasn't my focus or anything.
So take it all with a grain of salt.
While this is quite a simple size for a low margin of error,
it could still be useful for some basic things.
Sometimes these videos like come off as like I am the expert.
It won't begin analyzing.
It's like, yeah, I'm doing my best, but like, yeah,
but it's not totally accurate.
Like, don't kill me.
It's a fucking, you know, no one else is doing this shit.
And so yeah, that's fair.
First, I surveyed Minecraft.
Or more specifically, the Minecraft server, high pixel.
I couldn't really find a way to randomly select
the user names out of a pool of all the players
who have Minecraft.
But I figured I would treat this as if I was walking around
on the street and just asking people their names.
I wanted to screenshot the talk of people I ran across.
It's not a perfect system because each lobby could have
an unwanted version.
Is there duplicate names on the best we're going to do for that?
Oh, and not actually.
Well, I found some cool information based on my findings to the Minecraft
tag contains a number.
There's a 20% chance it is the number two.
The distribution of numbers is also very interesting.

Kind of 20% for two, three is 16% one is 14.
I would think one would be the highest, but think Minecraft use your own.
I guess not.
average four syllables and usually contain both capital and lower case letters.
My favorite gamer tag I found was horse-aboy-royed rage.

Next, I wanted to take a look at Counter Strike, but this time, I wanted to look for something
a bit more specific than I did with Minecraft.
I wanted to see if someone's gamer tag could predict their ranking.
So I painstakingly painstakingly?
I hate to be this guy, but I'm not trying to be an asshole.
I do not like when people wear sunglasses and videos like this.
It just, why?
So I painstakingly.

I thought I was going to see if I'm not supposed to see it.
I'm analyzing the earlier board.
I found some very interesting things.
These are names that have no capital letters or only to hide reading the script, but
I can literally see the screen though in the reflection.
significantly better than gamer tags with the mix of the two.
On average, user names who stick to only one case of letters
ranked about 1,000 places higher on the lead of board than those without.
How you don't even have to have eye contact the entire time.
I don't know if you've ever seen me do an off-screen off-stream video,
but like I don't even look at the camera all the time.
Do I think capital letters are gonna magically make you better at counter strike?
Maybe.
One possible explanation is the age of the accounts.
It's possible older accounts on average
were more conforming to either one case due to popular naming conventions
of that time.
And as such, I would say older accounts probably have first
dips on names that don't have a one or a zero or an underscore,
or whatever, like the older the account and more chances
they have a four letter name or something.
But with more experience, maybe remnants of that age.
Another explanation that I think might be a bit more fun to consider
is that this commitment to the case of letters
comes from a player's general attitude.
Many of the greatest players
followed this naming habit, and by emulating them
with your gamer tag, perhaps you're emulating them
in other ways, like through studying
or mimicking their play style.
Now, I can't prove this for a fact,
not what I tried to, but as a professor of mine once said,
there's always a story within data.
And maybe this is that story.

It's a name.

like somebody bushered it so horribly in a game or like whatever it would have been that
you changed it after or friend or friend or friend joined the party and was like oh it's
up and then like it was so horrible that you were like I never want to be called that ever
again.
You choose for yourself to show or better yet but I'm gonna be better one if a lot of
you for better watching some of you have definitely had this happen where streamer reads
your name so horribly you're like yeah I'm good I'm never I'm changing my name now.
